Meet Britt Bernheim Ludwig

This entry is the final in a new series where WVCAN is bringing recognition to everyday heroes throughout the state. Each week through the end of the year, we’ll be highlighting a different team member – CAC staff or allied professional working with a center – who is a hero to us and the kids they serve.

Meet Britt Bernheim Ludwig. Britt is the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and a team member of the Child and Youth Advocacy Center serving Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas Counties. She has been an attorney for 25 years, and have been a prosecuting attorney for 5+ years.

What drew you to this work?  Community service, and I am a mom.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?  Making a positive impact on my community.

Tell me what an average work day looks like. I am not sure there is an average work day—lots of time spent in the courtroom, preparing cases for the courtroom, and follow up on investigations.

Can you share a de-identified story about a child who inspired you?  I am not sure if this story is very inspiring, because it did not end well for the child… When a six-year-old child in our county died at the hands of his caregiver but not in an obvious way, multiple disciplines came together to solve the child’s murder, and ultimately resulted in a jury trial and conviction of the caregiver for child abuse resulting in death. While we live in a small state with scarce resources, West Virginians commit their resources to find justice for children.

What keeps you up at night?  The kids we don’t know about or get to early enough but who need our help.

What motivates you?  Making our community better for children.

What’s the best thing about working as a multidisciplinary team on child abuse investigations?  The care and commitment of professionals working together for West Virginia children.

What was your first paying job?  Horse groom

Best stress relief.  Yoga

Favorite childhood memory.  Riding my favorite pony, 7up

If you could binge watch something this weekend, what is it?  Curb Your Enthusiasm

Favorite pizza toppings.  Spinach, pine nuts, and goat cheese
